A scientific study; published in the International Journal of Obesity concluded that oolong tea may be an effective crude drug for the treatment of obesity and fatty liver caused by a high-fat diet(1).
Various types of tea, all of which derive from the same plant, the camelia synensis have been used for thousands of years as a means to improve metabolism(1). Whilst Green and Black Teas all have health benefits, however, Oolong Tea is reported to be the most effective in increasing metabolism, improving fat transfer, preventing the spread of fat cells and helping to maintain weight loss. Oolong Tea, especially that which is produced amongst the high mountains of Taiwan, has significantly more antioxidants than green tea and can help improve one's immune system.
The primary difference between oolong and green tea is that oolong tea is handpicked and partially oxidized, outdoors, under the supervision of an expert scientist known as the tea master. The partial oxidization of Oolong tea helps to maintain its high antioxidant content and its ability to lower lipids (1). Oolong tea also contains a high level of polyphenols that have anti-inflammatory properties. One study suggested that oolong tea boosts the immune system by up to 10%, helps to burn fat on the abdomen and has the ability to regulate blood sugar levels (1).
Eve Baker, founder of the oolong Tea Company commented “ I have read various studies that report that Oolong tea can aid in weight loss, but I have noticed that the researchers often boil the tea for up to 1 hour and then feed copious amounts to the subject, alongside a very high-fat diet. I personally think this is not normal behavior and so would advise customers to read the literature carefully. I do however believe that by using a high-quality oolong tea, such as an authentic Alishan (light tea), or red rhythm (dark tea) there will no tannic aftertaste and hence no need to add milk (lactose sugars) or sugar (sucrose), which is generally considered to be a good thing.
